In most of the business environments (mostly in production areas), information is created in the form of data by data collection machines or data entry by human operators. Depnding on the nature of the data an its source, different technologies must be involved. For example, in a Crude Oil refinery, data is collected by electronic valves and sensors in miliseconds (snapshots) and is fed to other systems for future processing. While data is needed by miliseconds in one system, it is required to be processed every hour by another system. That's the nature of a production process.

Another case is the Banking industry which also collects data, in this case from people and data collectors such as check machines, ATMs and credit card processors. The snapshots to collect this data depend on the frecuency with wich the data gets to the collection point (seconds, minutes, hours and even days depending on different factors). Once this data is collected, it is processed and delivered in the way it is required by the business processes.

As a last example, the Cellular (Wireless) industry collects data by cells attached to communication towers. The data is transferred to corporate information systems and, at the same time, to users in the form of voice, video or processed data. While the cells use one technology to collect data, the corporate information systems use other kind of technology and the users, through their cell phones and PDAs use another kind of technology.

Depending on the way the data is collected and its use by the systems and applications involved, the need for Technology Integration is required in most of the casses.
